The Hundred Heroines Museum is one of kind – the only museum in the world dedicated to women in photography. We have a growing collection of prints, books and ephemera representing some of the greatest women photographers, as well as some interesting cameras from a micro spy camera to a large format plate camera.
Spread over two floors, upstairs serves as a contemporary gallery, where we host exhibitions featuring world-class photographers. Positioning photography as a catalyst for social change, women artists worldwide are highlighting inequalities, pushing boundaries and examining difficult social issues while creating extraordinary works of art. Their work highlights the power of photography.
Downstairs we have revolving displays from the collection, including works from the archives of Elisabeth Buchmeyer Lewis, Felicia Cronin and, Gloucestershire’s most famous photographer, Dorothy Wilding, best known for her portrait Queen Elizabeth II that graced our stamps for many years. “Poisoned Futures” is our flagship exhibition for the summer of 2025. The exhibition brings together the work of international artists, concerned with the impact of climate change on their local environment.
Check out the website for the programme around this important exhibition, including debates and workshops, as well as the chance to get involved creatively with some artistic activism. We have an innovative and lively youth programme, which we offer to schools and youth groups.
Supported by the Canon Young People Programme, we run workshops about using photography for story-telling.
