Mick Mills

This exhibition showcases the paintings of Vanessa Clemente Vincerò and Mick Mills. While both artists emphasise the value of abstract formal elements, such as line, tone and composition to inform their visual language, the expressive use of colour is at the core of their artistic practice.

Vanessa, a Stroud resident for most of her life, finds inspiration in depicting the human form, but she is, increasingly, motivated to represent the local landscape. This she interprets with exuberant large-scale paintings executed in vibrant colours and dynamic compositions. Vanessa favours the use of acrylic paint on canvas for the vivid hues and varied tactile qualities achievable with this medium.

While sharing Vanessa’s passion for colour, Mick Mills’ work, by contrast, achieves a more introspective and restrained effect. This is reflected in his use of motifs drawn from the hermetic world of the artist’s studio. These include forms such as the range of tools typically put to practical use in the process of producing an artwork.

The prosaic physicality of these objects is re-purposed and used, with some irony, as imagery placed at the service of achieving a subtly atmospheric final painted outcome. The mediums and techniques employed by Mick to produce these effects include stippling, dragging with a squeegee, acrylic spray paint and stencils, canvas stained with diluted paint and expressive brushwork. These methods enable him to create complex compositions which he articulates with a sophisticated and poetic colour palette.
