Nick Grellier presents GRAVITY, an exhibition of recent drawing, sculpture, text works and moving image.
While ‘gravity’ suggests a weighty seriousness to the work — bodies and objects in space tethered to the earth and its pull — there is a material and linguistic playfulness throughout Nick’s practice.
GRAVITY’s multidisciplinary works aim to address and counterbalance the weight of contemporary life. With an economy of visual language, Nick draws, constructs and reshapes ordinary domestic items, human detritus and parts of the body using low tech methods of making in resistance to the proliferation of digitisation, and to convey the use of humour as an essential tool for understanding personal experience and social structures, behaviours and hierarchies.
The objects, forms and materials in turn resonate with the essence of the Chapels of Rest which carry the imprint of previous lives passing through; traces of their purpose remain embedded in the buildings’ fabric. They hold a palpable duality — life and afterlife, the separate spaces for Nonconformist and Church of England worship — and their new identity as a place for arts and community in their elevated position overlooking Stroud.
The exhibition takes place across both Chapels from Wednesday to Sunday 5th-28th and is accompanied by a publication featuring writing by Paul Harper and Emily Lucas.
