Multidisciplinary works by Angela Findlay trace forgotten chapters and lives lingering in the spaces between what is known. Within these 180-year-old vaults, the past pulses through the present.
Families, communities… who and what have been forgotten, ignored, excluded, suppressed – hidden in life and in death? Memory falters, yet the heart remembers. Retrieval blurs the boundaries between real and imagined: the artist as plumber, reassembling fragments and coaxing histories to the surface, restoring flow where silence has settled.
Installation and process intertwine. Paint, mud, plaster and projection converge in a practice that remains responsive rather than fixed, shaped by site, research and conversation. The overlooked, the ordinary and the banal recur in her paintings and writings, gaining a prominence not usually afforded to them. Small details become conduits to larger histories; personal stories open onto collective memory.
Angela Findlay is an artist, public speaker and author of In My Grandfather’s Shadow (Penguin Transworld 2022). Her paintings have been widely exhibited. See the website for details of related talks, guided walks and events accompanying the exhibition.
