Interactive Open Studios Map

In 2023 we offered all Open Studio visitors the chance to test our newly designed interactive map to help plan routes, and find locations more easily.

We partnered up with the University of Gloucestershire and asked their students if they would like to start developing this idea. It is still in Beta mode (aka in its development stage), but we’re really glad we got to start working with Lucas Nixon-Malaure, Matt and Eunju Hitchcook-Yoo. We’re looking forward to developing even more digital projects with them - watch this space.

Visitors were encouraged to use the map to review and save a route around Stroud and the Five Valleys area.

How it works

  1. On the homepage scroll through the slides of the Open Studios directory (which is the same as the online PDF and the printed directory)

  2. At the bottom of most slides there is an option to “Add this location to your map” with a tick box, so you can add as many locations as you like

  3. Click the button to find ‘Your Map’ and you will see that an automated route has been created for you!

  4. You can add and remove studios directly within the map as well

  5. If something isn’t working, you may need to double check your browser settings - you will probably need to consent to the website accessing your location.

Helpful extras

  • The map uses the Google Map API, which means it should function in a similar way to a usual Google map

  • In the top left, you can click the ‘user location’ button (which looks like a target) which moves the map to where you are in real time

  • Also in the top left, you can change your mode of transport from ‘driving’ to ‘walking’ to ‘cycling’, and the map will automatically adapt the route

  • You can search for a location

  • You can change some of the site from ‘dark mode’ to ‘light mode’, depending on your preference

Please note : The site is still in Beta mode (aka in its development stage) so it’s not perfect, but we hope you will give it a go!
