‘Roaming Rites’ is a solo exhibition of reconstructed landscape paintings by James D. Wilson, developed during his 2023 artist-in-residence at This House.

Located in the picturesque Cotswold town of Nailsworth, This House Gallery is known for its intimate scale and commitment to supporting artists through focused residencies and thoughtfully curated exhibitions.

The residency allowed Wilson to expand his practice, shifting landscape into a central concern while responding directly to the surrounding environment.

Wilson’s paintings resist the notion of landscape as something observed from a single, fixed viewpoint. Instead, he collects partial views, sketches, and fleeting impressions, often captured from train windows or on foot.

These fragments are transformed into studio works with a re-constructed quality, evoking movement through terrain rather than still observation. Gestural marks suggest paths, horizons, and topography, while hard edges, cuts, and shifts in scale create visual tension. Light, often crepuscular or unsettled, reinforces a sense of transition.

The title Roaming Rites plays on “roaming rights,” framing habitual movement through land as a ritual. Anticipation of outward journeys and reflection upon return inform the paintings’ rhythm and memory. Together, the works invite contemplation of the quiet rituals of passage and the layered experience of moving through place, establishing a dialogue between Wilson, the gallery space, and the landscapes that inspire him.

‘Roaming Rites’ will be exhibiting at This House from Friday 12th June to Saturday 11th July, all are welcome to come and see the exhibition. For any further information you can contact gallery founders, Katie or Tash at info@thishouse.uk
