Nik Ramage is a mechanical sculptor, bringing odd ideas to life with moving parts and found objects. For his residency at SVA, he will show Double Take, a two-week show of mechanical oddities and everyday objects having unexpected encounters. You may find clocks misbehaving, fruit being caressed, wooden hands scratching unseen itches and shoes walking themselves.

Throughout both weekends, Nik will let his contraptions loose from the gallery, taking them out into the streets to mingle with everyday life and perhaps eliciting some double takes.

Meanwhile, what are the sculptures getting up to, whilst we are not looking? What does that lemon make of all this attention, this intimacy? Whose time are those clocks keeping? Are you sure that’s the best way to transport a cup of tea?

Nik Ramage has been making useless machines and absurd devices for over thirty years. He has been commissioned to make a mechanical ceiling for a private dining room, a chain reaction machine in a 60,000 square foot warehouse and moving decorations for Paul Smith’s Christmas tree at Claridge’s.

He is an academician at the RWA, Bristol and a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. He lives in Monmouthshire and works in two sheds.

Nik Ramage will be taking his sculptures for performative walks over the Open Studio weekends.
