Site Festival Programme

site 2012

Every year new sites are acquired and used by artists to present curated projects. Internationally acclaimed artist Aleksandra Mir will be showing The Big Scale at Index, a new project space in Stroud. The Stroud Fish Bar is opening up with Faster Food, Faster Paintings, a series of works that takes the brash design of fast food culture and turns it into something gloriously greased up. Before You Leave, at the Brunel Goods Shed will be one of the featured pop up exhibitions in the Site Festival.

Artist led performance groups, including tactileBOSCH (Cardiff) and ]performance s p a c e [ (London), will be exploring the exchange between audience, artist-led spaces, performers and site for The Performance Exchange, curated by Soozy Roberts

Special screenings with directors talks are brought to the Site Festival by Negative Space with acclaimed artist-filmmaker Andrew Kötting and This Our Still Life; Mezz and Ben Rivers' first feature-length film Two Years at Sea and Stroud Arts Festival with Gypsy Caravan and Jasmine Dellal.

A series of spoken word events has been programmed this year with Jamilla Gavin, The Attention Seekers and the Site Poetry Slam as well as adding some opera into the festival mix with the Olivier-winning OperaUpClose production of The Barber of Seville. A poetry and comedy festival highlight will be John Hegley and Simon Munnery followed the next night with the return of the Bristolian jazzy post-rockers Get The Blessing.

The Art and Money seminar, featuring Paul Hobbs from the Contemporary Arts Society, Gavin Wade and Alastair Gentry, offers insights into the contemporary art market, working with curators and alternative ways in which artistic practice can be sustained.

Don't forget to pick up an Open Studios directory, which details over 80 artists showing their work in their studios. This event, spanning the two middle weekends, is a highlight for many wishing to view and buy work outside the gallery institutions.

Visitors to the Site Festival will be able to enjoy the Stroud International Textiles' programme of events, which takes place in the same month. Select 2012 opens from 28th April to 27th May at the Museum in the Park with Pairings II-conversations & collaborations with a linked symposium on 5th May.
