In Negotiation
Saturdays 7th and 14th June 11am Stroud Valleys Artspace
4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA

The In Negotiation discussion series was started in 2005 by James Porter and Colin Glen as a response to setting up a project space in a shop on the outskirts of Stroud. It was conceived as a creative and critical approach to negotiating difference of opinion with regard to issues of production in art practice. Dominic Thomas and Colin Glen continued the series throughout the site festival in 2006 and 2007, holding discussions where artists with differing backgrounds, ways of working and value systems came together to negotiate their conflicting positions.
In Negotiation aims to encourage and facilitate peer discussion amongst artists and arts professionals on issues of theory and practice in their work in order to create a forum of frank and beneficial exchange. For site08 In Negotiation invites participants to bring an issue for open discussion. The events will then be structured to accommodate the range of topics that emerge. It is intended that a lively and entertaining exchange can be accommodated.

With ecology increasingly taking central stage in all areas of life it is important that the arts re-examine their ‘footprint’ in this context. The discussions will outline areas of research and practice with speakers providing artistic and theoretical perspectives on a burgeoning area of interest. This symposium aims to develop artistic and public awareness of the diversity of debates and practice within the visual arts as well as a networking opportunity. Panel discussion members will be Daro Montag (research leader @ R.A.N.E), Shelly Sacks (Social Sculpture Research Unit) and Neville Gabie (Artist in residence for the British Antarctic Survey 08/09). Leading arts consultant Lesley Greene (Arts Consultant, Author) will be chairing the discussion and giving a presentation. Artists Simon Ryder (Art Nucleus), Tara Downs (Roving Studio) and Gavin McClafferty (Last Gallery) will also be giving presentations.

The Last Gallery is an on-going project made from art industry waste identifying the role the creative arts have in adapting to the challenges of climate change and fossil fuel depletion. It functions as focal point and forum, but as a forum is the gallery to be a market for ideas or commodity?
By acting as an initiator for social engagement and stimulating exchanges of ideas and information, the Last Gallery explores the idea of what constitutes an artwork and avoids the production or consumption of objects.
In collaboration with local groups
and Colin Glen's In Negotiation, artist Gavin McClafferty seeks to question
the distinction between life and the creative act.
